I think someone tried to break into our house. This morning when my husband was leaving for work, he found that someone had tried to pry the peep-hole off of our front door. My husband works for a company that does security systems and locksmithing, etc so he knows what he is talking about here! He said that there is a method of breaking in where a person pries off the peep hole and sticks something through it that can grab on to the lock from the inside and unlock the door! Then when they leave, the just put the peep hole back in and close the door unlocked. It looks like you forgot to lock your front door!
We have a double cylindered deadbolt on our front door. In other words, you need a key to open it from either side of the door. You might want to consider something like that if you have a peep hole or a window in or near your front door.
